“Together, We Are New York”

“Together, We Are New York”

“Together, We Are New York”

The mural illustrates the duality of New York City by combining maritime and land imagery, connected by the Verrazano bridge. It depicts scenes that highlight what it means to be a New Yorker and how we help each other.

The first segment shows the Staten Island Ferry in front of the Manhattan skyline as universal symbols for both the New York and the Staten Island community. The man-powered kayak represents the adaptability, resiliency, and tenacity of New Yorkers. The center exhibits outdoor activities that showcase the leadership and structural integrity of the New York community. The painted scenarios characterize typical recreational park activities such arts & culture, gardening, sports, and leisurely families. The flowers,  butterflies, and music note accents represent diversity, hope, and dreams. A focal point of the garden will be daffodil flowers that serve as a memorial to those lost on 9/11. Finally, the words “LOVE, COMMUNITY, & FAMILY” in the background emphasize the concepts of connectivity, unity, and inclusivity that bind the design together.
